Cant say I would recomend a 223 for FTR, but I have my Prairie Dog rifle on loan to a friend of mine so his Son can shoot in our Monthly 600 yard Fclass matches in Memphis TN. The range is ussually pretty mild, more in the morning before the Fishtail winds pick up. Getting a new shooter out and enjoying the company and self competition is important. I believe this is young James's 5th match to include a State Championship under his belt. Not to bad for a 14 year old young man. Check out his first Match.. A 194-5X for third place against the adults. That little rifle shoots pretty darn well!!! Things got a little rougher for him as the wind picked up.
George Toney match F-T/R 200-9x Roger Carpenter match F-T/R 196 -5X Craig Bowlby match F-T/R 189-4x Bob Gilfoy match F-T/R 191-7x Bruce Swindall match F-T/R 186-2x James Fletcher match F-T/R 194-5x Don Swindall match F-T/R 157-1x

Its my project cheapo from a few years back when I worked at marv's Harware. One of the best gun shops in the state! Sad to see it gone. Bruce had a 223 Action for sale that I picked up real cheap. I think it was $200. I found a barrel on sale out of Midway. Its a 1:7 Twist Douglas Chrome Moly 25" Bull barrel Staight taper that has the Pee fluted out of it. Chamber is 223 match Min. SAMMI spec. The barrel cost $138 dollers but the fluting cost almost the same!! Joel Ackerman did all the metal work. I found a Choate stock for $160 and the scope was $299. It shoots just about every thing I stick into it. 77Gr match ammo from Black hills, Gold Medal,Atlanta Arms. Loves Our Team ammo with 80gr Sierra Match Kings and R15. Shoots Dougs, 80gr Amax loads and R15 well also. My Priarie Dog load is 25gr Accurate 2520 with a 75gr Hornady Amax. I could load that load on a progressive with real ease. I have since installed a Timney trigger which is quite impressive for the cost of that trigger. Jewel... No but damn nice. Also have a Sightron SIII 8X32 for it as well with the 1/8 Target Dot. I used to use a Harris Bipod but have since purchased a Pheonix precision FTR bipod... That costs more than every part on the rifle.. Ha! www.phoenixprec.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=7&products_id=13&zenid=ruau5474u184qff9ctk3s9c6h2So thats it. Cheap $138 doller Douglas barrel. It even has some rust pits mid way down the barrel. Doesnt seem to matter one little bit. RussT Attachments:
